AhlulBayt News Agency: The Gaza Municipality confirmed on Saturday that the city is experiencing a significant water crisis due to the incursion of Israeli occupation forces into areas east of the city, resulting in the stoppage of the Mekorot water line, which supplies about 70% of the city’s current water needs.
The municipality said in a post on its Facebook page that “the line runs through the eastern region in the Shuja’iyya neighborhood and stopped pumping on Thursday evening.”
It noted that municipal teams are currently communicating with the relevant authorities to allow access to the line’s route east of the city and assess its condition to ensure its safety, in preparation for restoring water supply to residents.
The municipality explained that “the Mekorot line used to supply the city with about 20% of its daily needs before the onset of the aggression and genocide in October 2023. However, after the aggression and the destruction of most water wells, in addition to the destruction of the central desalination plant located northwest of Gaza City, along with the energy and electricity shortages, the municipality now relies on Mekorot for 70% of its daily needs. A portion of this water is distributed via truck-mounted tanks to areas that do not receive municipal water.”
The municipality pointed out that “the Israeli occupation deliberately targeted water facilities during the aggression, causing significant damage and widespread destruction to wells and networks, which created a severe crisis in providing and delivering water to vast areas of the city.”
The Gaza Municipality urged citizens to rationalize water consumption and support each other to overcome this crisis, affirming that it will work to provide limited quantities of water from other sources according to available capabilities, and that it will continue to cooperate with private well owners and neighborhood committees in various areas to provide fuel for operating the wells and delivering water to surrounding areas.
The Gaza Municipality appealed to human rights and international organizations to pressure Israel to inspect the supplying line and resume its operation to prevent a health disaster or the outbreak of diseases, especially with rising temperatures and increasing demand for water.
